Shovel
The shovel or spade is a tool used for clearing blocks. It has two separate features: block-gathering, assigned to the left click; and tunnel-and-trench-digging, assigned to the right click. As of version Beta 0.70, the shovel can be used as a melee weapon.

[edit] Primary (Left Click)
The primary function is that of its predecessor, the pickaxe. The action is 'bashing' of a block, destroying a previously untouched block in three hits. Every block removed with this method is added to the player's block count until the maximum of 50 blocks is reached. The damage that the shovel deals can vary from server to server, but the pyspades default is 80 per strike.
[edit] Secondary (Right Click)
The secondary function is for digging. The blocks that are destroyed with this method are not added to the player's handheld block count. The blocks above and below the target, if they exist, are removed as well as the target. Not only does it clear up to 3 blocks at a time, it is also quieter than the primary function. This makes it an ideal tool for digging trenches and tunnels quickly.
[edit] Tunneling
The shovel's secondary feature (right-click) is often used for tunneling, as it destroys up to 3 blocks at once and creates space large enough for a player to move while standing up. A noise is created each time the shovel makes contact with a block, allowing enemies the opportunity to pinpoint your location underground. However, the primary function makes much more noise, so tunnelling with the secondary digging function is less likely to be detected.
